Wednesday

Well, as you can see, I never made it back last night.  Wes had 2 papers to write and a sociology final to study for. He was up til 3:00 am. on the computer.  Too late for me!  I had a nagging headache all day yesterday and took a couple of Tylenol PM's after dinner.  Well, by 9:00 I was in bed, headache gone, but couldn't keep my eyes open!  Wes wasn't too happy because he was hoping I would help him with his papers.  I grabbed his research and highlighted and circled the important parts and made notes in the margins.  Then, when I could no longer focus, I handed them back to him and said "good luck", and I was out like a light.  This morning I got up at 6:30 to find he had a rough draft on the computer, so I edited and corrected his spelling and punctuation while he was in the shower.  I shoved the finished copy into his hands as he was going out the door.  Am I an idiot?!  I didn't have anyone there to help me in college!  I took "no-doze" when I had a paper to do so I could stay up and work all night!  I don't know what to do.  If we don't help him, he could fail.  That doesn't just hurt him because we paid for his classes!  That's our money going down the drain!  If we make him pay for his own college then it will take him forever to finish and besides, isn't it our duty as parents to see he is educated?  WAAHH! I am so upset about this!  He is a smart kid!  He had  very high SAT scores, so I know he can do it. . .he's just too lazy and unmotivated. What a way to start the day.  A dark and damp day, I might add.  And I have an ant bite on my thumb that I keep bumping on the space bar and it hurts!  . . .(wwaahh again). . .Maybe I'll go jump back into bed and start over.  Mmmm sounds good.  I can't do it, but I do need to do my "Frazzled Female" Bible study homework.  That should help.

I am sorry to dump my frustrations out on you all this morning! Have a great day!

This is exactly how my 17 year old son is.  A very smart kid...High SAT and ACT scores but has managed over the school year to fail 2 classes.  He wont open a book when he gets home from school and we have tried everything to motivate and encourage him to study.  Now, we are paying for summer school so he can make up the failed classes.  Gotta love em'  :)

I would tell him that if he failed the class, that the next time he had to take it..whatever you paid on it would be considered a  LOAN from him...Thats rediculous as you say..Thats YOUR MONEY he is trying to throw away....And I would help too, but only when he has done HIS part...And not giving him too many ideas or explanations in the sides of the paper..LOL..;)..Hope you get to feeling better. I know that has got to be stressful. I have had a rough time finishing colege myself..but it's mY student loans that are suffering..lol..so luckily mom doesnt have to go nuts on me..HAHA

Just like when they were toddlers trying to learn to walk......sometimes we have to let them fall in order to learn to stand.  Paying for higher education?  A priveledge if you can.  A responsibility.....no.  Perhaps you should come up with a weighted formula for paying for his schooling.  The percentages on the grades he recieves this semester will determine the percentage you will pay for next semester.  Just a thought.  Also, if this is merely a core requirement and not his subject of declared major, perhaps he'll improve when he hits his courses that go directly to his interest.  -  Barbara

Oh good!  I'm not the only one with a smart, high-SAT-scoring son who is now lazy and unmotivated in school!  But mine is a FRESHMAN IN HIGH SCHOOL!  I don't know what has happened to him this year.  I hope he MAKES it to college!  Good luck with Wes!
